Braces or invisalign for 12 year old

Both can work. The right choice depends on your child’s teeth and how likely they are to wear clear aligners properly. Fixed braces stay on all the time, so there’s nothing to remember. Aligners are almost invisible and come out for eating and brushing, but they only work if they’re worn for around 22 hours a day. For a child who’s likely to forget, lose or leave them out, fixed braces are often the safer bet.

At YOR Dental in MediaCity, Manchester, parents often ask us this, and the honest answer is that it depends on the child as much as the teeth.

Fixed braces vs aligners: the main trade-off

With fixed braces, your child can’t take them out. They’re fixed to the teeth, so they just get on with the job, even if your child forgets all about them. The catch is food. Bits get caught around the wires, so brushing takes longer, and your child might need to go easy on hard or chewy snacks.

Aligners are different. Your child can take them out to eat and brush, which makes both a lot easier. But that also means they can get forgotten. They might end up on a lunch tray, in a coat pocket, or lost altogether. And if they’re not worn enough, the teeth won’t move the way they should.

Things to think about for your child

  • Are they generally good at looking after their things?
  • Will they put the aligners back in straight after eating, even at school?
  • Do they play contact sports?
  • How do they feel about how braces look?

There’s no wrong answer. It’s about what will work for your child day to day.

Simple tips if you choose aligners

Give your child a brightly coloured case so their aligners are easy to spot and less likely to get thrown away in a napkin. It also helps to agree on a routine for school lunchtimes, such as taking them out, eating, rinsing, and putting them straight back in.

Not sure which is best?

Frequently asked question

Can children play sports with braces or aligners?
Yes. For contact sports like rugby, a mouthguard is a good idea to protect the teeth and lips. Ask your dentist which type is best for your child’s treatment.
