Dental Hygiene & Deep Cleaning at YOR Dental

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile and at YOR Dental, our dental hygiene treatments are designed to do more than simply leave your teeth feeling beautifully clean.

Regular hygiene appointments help protect your gums, prevent gum disease, reduce staining and bad breath, and support your long-term oral health. Even if you brush and floss carefully every day, plaque can still build up in difficult-to-reach areas. Over time, this can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with brushing alone. A professional dental hygiene appointment allows us to remove these deposits safely and thoroughly while keeping a close eye on the health of your teeth and gums.

Why are regular dental hygiene appointments important?

Professional cleaning helps remove the plaque and tartar responsible for this inflammation and gives your gums the best possible chance of staying healthy.

Regular dental hygiene appointments can also help:

  • Reduce your risk of gum disease
  • Prevent bleeding and inflamed gums
  • Keep your breath fresher
  • Remove stubborn surface staining
  • Protect the bone and tissues supporting your teeth
  • Support dental implants, crowns, bridges and other restorations
  • Identify potential oral health concerns earlier
  • Help you maintain your natural teeth for longer
We offer deep cleaning for gum disease that's already setting in

If you have signs of gum disease or deeper pockets have developed around your teeth, you may need a more thorough form of cleaning.

Deep dental cleaning, sometimes referred to as periodontal cleaning or root surface debridement, involves carefully cleaning beneath the gum line to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from around the roots of the teeth.

This helps reduce inflammation and gives the gums the opportunity to heal and tighten around the teeth again. Depending on the extent of your gum disease, deep cleaning may be carried out over more than one appointment and local anaesthetic can be used to make treatment more comfortable where required .For patients with more advanced gum problems, we may recommend ongoing periodontal maintenance appointments to help keep the condition under control.

Tea, coffee, red wine, smoking and certain foods can all contribute to surface staining on the teeth. Professional hygiene treatment can help remove many of these everyday stains, leaving your teeth feeling smoother, cleaner and fresher. Where appropriate, we can also advise you on enhanced stain-removal treatments and cosmetic options if you would like to brighten your smile further. It is important to remember that professional cleaning removes surface staining but does not change the natural colour of your teeth in the same way as professional teeth whitening.

Does a dental hygiene appointment hurt?

For most people, routine hygiene treatment is very comfortable.

  • If your gums are particularly sensitive or inflamed, you may experience some tenderness during treatment, especially if it has been a while since your last professional clean.
  • If you need deeper periodontal cleaning, local anaesthetic can be used where appropriate to keep you comfortable.
  • If you feel nervous about treatment, please tell us. We will always work at a pace that feels right for you and explain everything as we go.
Can a dental hygienist help with bleeding gums?

Yes. Bleeding gums are often one of the earliest signs of gum inflammation and should not simply be ignored. The good news is that early gum disease can often be managed very successfully with professional cleaning combined with improved home care. Your hygienist can identify where the problem is occurring, remove the plaque and tartar contributing to the inflammation and show you how to clean more effectively between appointments.

At YOR Dental, we want you to leave your appointment not only with a cleaner, fresher smile, but with a better understanding of how to look after it every day. If it has been a while since your last hygiene appointment, or you have noticed bleeding gums, bad breath, staining or changes in your gum health, our friendly team is here to help. Just book in with our team and we’ll take a non-judgemental look.

General dentistry FAQs

Most patients benefit from seeing a hygienist every 6 months. If you’re prone to gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or have a history of dental issues, we may recommend more frequent visits—sometimes every 3–4 months.

A dental hygiene appointment is usually not painful, but everyone’s experience is different depending on the condition of your teeth and gums. If you have a build-up of plaque or tartar, sensitive teeth, or inflamed gums, you may feel some mild discomfort or sensitivity during certain parts of the clean, especially around the gumline.

Your hygienist will use specialised tools to gently remove plaque and tartar, polish your teeth, and may offer advice on improving your at-home oral care. If your gums are sore or you have gum disease, some areas may feel a little tender and you might notice slight sensitivity afterwards, particularly when eating or drinking hot or cold foods.

At YOR Dental, the team will always aim to make your appointment as comfortable as possible. They can adjust their technique, take breaks if needed, and talk you through the process so you feel at ease. If you’re feeling anxious or have particularly sensitive teeth, let them know before the appointment—they’ll be happy to help make the experience more comfortable.

Most patients leave feeling that the treatment was much easier than expected, with their teeth feeling noticeably cleaner and fresher afterwards.

A check-up focuses on examining your teeth and oral health for issues like decay or disease. A hygiene appointment focuses on professional cleaning—removing plaque, tartar, and stains that regular brushing can’t reach.

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common problem and can happen for a number of reasons. In many cases, it’s caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth, often due to food particles left between the teeth, plaque build-up, or bacteria sitting on the tongue.

Poor oral hygiene is one of the most common causes, but bad breath can also be linked to gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, smoking, or certain foods and drinks like coffee, garlic, and alcohol.

Sometimes, bad breath can be caused by an underlying health issue such as sinus infections, acid reflux, diabetes, or digestive problems, so if it’s persistent, it may be worth getting checked.

To help improve bad breath, you should:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste Floss or use interdental brushes daily to remove trapped food and plaque Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper or your toothbrush Drink plenty of water to avoid dry mouth Cut back on smoking and strong-smelling foods Visit your dentist or hygienist regularly for professional cleans and check-ups
  • At YOR Dental, the team can help identify the root cause of your bad breath and recommend the best treatment. This may include a professional hygiene clean to remove plaque and tartar, treatment for gum disease, or advice on improving your oral care routine. If your bad breath is ongoing, booking an appointment can help you get to the bottom of it and leave you feeling fresher and more confident.
