Missing teeth can affect far more than your smile. They can change the way you eat, speak and feel about yourself. Thankfully, modern dental implants offer a predictable, long-lasting solution that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth, or set of teeth
If you’re considering dental implants right now, it’s completely normal to have questions. Is the procedure painful? How long does treatment take? Will I need sedation? And which type of implant is right for me?
In this short guide, our implant team answers the questions we hear most often to help you make an informed decision about how to approach any treatment for missing teeth if you are considering implants to fix your smile.
Dental implants are small titanium posts placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over the following months the implant bonds naturally with the surrounding bone and surrounding tissue before a bespoke crown, bridge or denture is then attached.
Unlike removable dentures, implants are fixed securely in place, allowing you to eat, smile and speak with real confidence, without fearing the thought your dentures may slip or fall out!
“For many patients, dental implants don’t simply replace a tooth – they restore confidence and quality of life. Our goal is to create a smile that feels and looks so natural you forget you’ve ever lost a tooth.”
There are number of different options when it comes to dental implants and here at Yor Dental we treat every patient individually based on an initial inspection of your missing teeth and the desired outcome you want to achieve.
Most healthy adults are suitable candidates. Your dentist will assess your gums, bone levels, medical history and oral health. Even if you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone density, procedures such as bone grafting or sinus augmentation may still make implant treatment possible. So don’t be told otherwise.
Modern implant dentistry has transformed thanks to digital technology. Three-dimensional CBCT scanning, digital impressions and computer-guided planning allow implants to be positioned with exceptional accuracy while reducing guesswork and improving predictability.
A dental implant procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain while the implant is being placed. Most patients say the experience is easier and more comfortable than they expected and often compare it favourably to having a tooth removed. Mild swelling or tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and is usually controlled with standard pain relief and rest.
Many patients are perfectly comfortable having implants under local anaesthetic alone. However, conscious sedation can be recommended for nervous patients or more complex procedures, helping you remain deeply relaxed while still able to respond to your dentist.
A straightforward implant placement usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes. The implant then needs around three to six months to integrate with the jawbone before the final restoration is fitted. Some patients may be suitable for immediate temporary teeth depending on their clinical circumstances.
With good oral hygiene, regular dental examinations and professional hygiene appointments, dental implants can last for many years. Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after the implant itself so it’s really important that you book regular check-ups and hygiene cleans to keep on top of any issues, before they become problems.
