IV drip therapy has quickly moved from the hospital ward to wellness clinics and practices the world over. But as with anything that gains cultural momentum quickly, the claims can sometimes outrun the evidence, so here’s a deeper look at the science behind the marketing.
You might well wonder why IV therapy has come to high prevalence in the first place, with so many supplements widely available online and on the high street, you might question whether there’s actually a need for it. For many people, it’s not that oral supplements don’t work but their effectiveness can be constrained by the digestive process, particularly for those who have pre-existing health conditions.
When you take a supplement orally, it has to pass through the digestive system before it reaches your bloodstream. How much of it gets actually gets there (the ‘bioavailability’) depends on the compound, the dose and the health of the individual taking it. Vitamin C is good example to demonstrate this. At low doses, oral bioavailability is relatively high, but because the gut self-limits absorption as the dose increases, the body excretes what it can’t process rather than putting it to use. This is why high-dose Vitamin C supplementation orally has a cap that IV delivery doesn’t share.
Intravenous administration completely bypasses the digestive process, meaning the compound enters the bloodstream directly with 100% bioavailability. For clients with compromised absorption due to coeliac disease, IBS or chronic conditions that affect nutrient uptake this can offer a marked difference.
Contrary to what you might think, IV therapy isn’t a one-off treatment or a quick-fix solution. It’s a category of treatments with formulations that can differ quite considerably depending on what’s being addressed. Getting to know about the main components and what the evidence for them looks like is worth your time before committing to anything further.
Vitamin C
This is probably the most widely used component for its role in immune function, collagen synthesis and antioxidant activity is well established.
B-complex vitamins
B vitamins and particularly B12 are involved in energy metabolism, neurological function and red blood cell production. B12 deficiency can be common in people following plant-based diets, on long term medications like metformin or whose gut absorption is impaired. Deficiency can show up as fatigue, cognitive fog and mood changes, and it can be a long time until these changes are flagged on a standard blood panel from your GP.
Magnesium
Involved in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body, including muscle and nerve function, blood sugar regulation, sleep quality and cardiovascular health, it is also one of the nutrients found to be sub-optimal in otherwise healthy adults. Processed food diets and chronic stress are also contributors to this.
Glutathione
This is the body’s primary antioxidant, produced in the liver and involved in cellular repair and detoxification. Oral glutathione has limited bioavailability as it breaks down in the digestive tract before reaching systemic circulation in the body in large enough quantities. IV delivery is one of the few routes that reliably raises plasma glutathione levels which is why it has attracted clinical interest.
NAD+
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide plays a central role in cellular energy production and DNA repair. There is a growing evidence base around NAD+ IV therapy and its application in addressing fatigue, cognitive function and cellular ageing.
This is where a lot of IV therapy content goes wrong. The tendency is often to position it as something that’s universally beneficial, a wellness upgrade to anyone with the inclination and budget. The reality around which is more nuanced.
The strongest evidence base sits around people with confirmed nutritional deficiencies, compromised gut absorption, immune system challenges or those with identifiable contributing factors like post-surgical contexts. In these situations, IV therapy is a targeted clinical treatment with measurable outcomes.
For people without such deficiencies, the rationale shifts to optimisation. That means supporting function at a higher level to reduce things like inflammatory load or addressing the gap between diet and particular lifestyle demands.
What’s important here is whether treatment is preceded by testing. Blood testing is the only way to gather the baseline data to determine what is really needed over what’s generally plausible. Correcting a confirmed deficiency is a different clinical proposition from optimising function in someone whose levels are already adequate, and your treatment provider should be clear with you about this.
