What are dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue.

They are custom-made to fit the shape of your mouth and can replace a few missing teeth, a complete upper or lower arch, or both arches. Modern dentures are carefully designed to support your facial profile, improve your ability to eat and speak, and restore the natural appearance of your smile.

At YOR Dental, we offer three main types of dentures:

  • Complete dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
  • Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth and fit around your remaining natural teeth.
  • Implant-retained dentures are supported by dental implants for improved stability and comfort.

How are dentures different from other restorative treatments?

Unlike dental implants and bridges, traditional dentures are removable and are not permanently fixed into your mouth. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth and is usually supported by the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Dental implants involve placing titanium posts into the jawbone to support a crown, bridge or denture.

Dentures do not usually require surgery, making them a more affordable and less invasive way to replace several or all of your missing teeth. They can also be suitable for patients who do not have sufficient bone density for conventional implants or who would prefer a removable solution.

However, traditional dentures do not provide the same stability or jawbone stimulation as dental implants. We’ll explain the advantages and limitations of every suitable option so you can make a fully informed decision.

Could dentures be right for you?

You may be suitable for dentures if you:

  • Are missing several or all of your upper or lower teeth.
  • Have loose, damaged or heavily restored teeth that cannot be saved.
  • Want a cost-effective way to replace missing teeth.
  • Would prefer to avoid implant surgery.
  • Need a temporary solution while your mouth heals.
  • Already wear dentures that feel uncomfortable, loose or worn.
  • Want additional stability from implant-retained dentures.

Dentures are not just for older patients. Adults of many different ages may lose teeth because of decay, gum disease, injury or other health conditions.

The best way to understand whether dentures are right for you is through a consultation with our experienced team. We’ll assess your teeth, gums, bite and general oral health before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

What happens when you’re fitted for dentures?

Every smile is unique, which is why every set of dentures we provide is individually designed.

1
Your consultation

We’ll begin by discussing your concerns, lifestyle and what you would like to achieve. We’ll carefully examine your teeth, gums and bite and may take digital scans, impressions or X-rays to assess your oral health.

We’ll talk you through the different types of dentures available, as well as alternative treatments such as bridges, dental implants or All-on-4 implants where appropriate.

You’ll receive a personalised treatment plan and a fully itemised quotation before deciding whether to proceed.

2
Designing your dentures

We’ll take precise impressions or digital scans of your mouth so your dentures can be made to fit as accurately and comfortably as possible.

We’ll also carefully select the size, shape and shade of your replacement teeth. Where possible, your dentures will be designed to complement your natural appearance, facial features and any remaining teeth.

You may attend one or more trial appointments so we can assess the fit, bite and appearance before your final dentures are completed.

3
Fitting your new smile

Once your dentures are ready, we’ll carefully fit them and check that they feel secure and comfortable.

New dentures can feel unfamiliar at first, and it may take a little time for your mouth, tongue and facial muscles to adapt. You might initially notice more saliva, minor tenderness or small changes to your speech and eating.

We’ll give you practical advice and arrange any adjustments needed to help you become comfortable and confident with your new smile.

When might dentures not be suitable?

Dentures are suitable for many patients, but they may not always provide the best solution for you and your smile.

Traditional dentures may not be right for you if you strongly prefer fixed teeth, find removable appliances difficult to manage or want greater stability when eating and speaking. Severe dry mouth, a sensitive gag reflex, significant changes to the jawbone or certain oral health problems can also make conventional dentures more challenging to wear. Any active gum disease, decay or infection will usually need to be treated before your dentures are fitted.

Where traditional dentures are unlikely to provide the comfort or stability you need, we may discuss alternatives such as implant-retained dentures, dental bridges or All-on-4 dental implants.

What are the pros and cons of dentures?

Dentures offer a relatively quick, non-surgical and cost-effective way to replace several missing teeth. They can restore your smile, support your facial profile and make eating and speaking more comfortable.

However, they need to be removed for cleaning and may take time to get used to. Your gums and jawbone will naturally change over time, which means dentures can gradually become loose and may need adjusting, relining or replacing.

Traditional dentures can also move slightly when you eat or speak. For patients looking for greater security, implant-retained dentures can be clipped onto dental implants to help reduce movement.

How much do dentures cost?

The cost of dentures depends on the type you need, the number of teeth being replaced, the materials selected and whether any preparatory treatment is required.

At YOR Dental:

  • Partial dentures start from £[INSERT CURRENT PRICE].
  • Complete dentures start from £[INSERT CURRENT PRICE] per arch.
  • Implant-retained dentures are individually priced following a clinical assessment.

Following your consultation, we’ll provide a personalised treatment plan and fully itemised quotation, with no hidden surprises. We can also discuss available finance options to help make the cost of treatment more manageable.

Denture FAQs

Looking after your dentures properly will help keep them fresh, comfortable and functioning at their best.

Remove and clean them every day using a soft denture brush and a cleaning product recommended by your dentist. Avoid ordinary toothpaste, boiling water or abrasive cleaners, as these may scratch or distort the denture.

Unless we advise otherwise, you should remove your dentures overnight to give your gums time to rest. Keep them safely covered with water or an appropriate denture solution to prevent them from drying out or changing shape.

You should also clean your gums, tongue and any remaining natural teeth twice a day. Regular dental examinations and hygiene appointments remain important, even if you have no natural teeth, as they allow us to check the health of your mouth and the ongoing fit of your dentures.

If your dentures crack, break, become loose or start causing discomfort, contact us as soon as possible and we’ll get you sorted..

Do not attempt to repair broken dentures using superglue or a home repair kit. Household adhesives may contain unsuitable ingredients, can damage the denture and may make a professional repair more difficult.

Depending on the damage, your dentures may be repairable or may need to be relined or replaced. If you lose them, we’ll arrange an assessment and help create a replacement as quickly as possible.

Keeping your previous dentures as a temporary spare can also be helpful, provided they remain safe and comfortable to wear.

Dentures are designed to last for years, but they will not necessarily last forever.

Your gums and jawbone continue to change after teeth have been lost, which can gradually affect how securely your dentures fit. The denture teeth can also become worn through everyday eating and speaking.

Regular examinations allow us to monitor their condition and identify when an adjustment, reline or replacement may be beneficial. Never continue wearing dentures that are persistently loose, painful or damaging your gums.
